The Breakup Challenge & Whole30 First Week

Tuesday, January 5, 2016

Do something for you:

It's finally here. The Breakup Challenge with Laura and our Whole30 Round 2. So I am writing this on day 1 and all I want to do is crawl into bed right now. I felt pretty good all day but the first day is never the issue, it's what happens down the road. So since I don't really have anyhting to report this week I thopught I would focus on the next 7 days. According to Whole30 this is what I can expect...

What to expect this week from the Whole30:

Day 1: So what’s the big deal?

  • I got this, it's  easy peasy and I don't miss a thing. Reality has clearly not set in.

Days 2-3: The Hangover

  • Ugh... did someone drug me? My body has now decided to fully process all the shit I consumed the last couple days of "freedom" i.e. cheese, pizza, beer, chips, dips, wine, chocolate, lemon bars, grilled cheese sandwiches. Since I way overdid it I guess I can expect headaches, fatigue and general malaise. Last time this was not so bad for me so fingers crossed!

Days 4-5: Kill ALL the things!

  • So I will feel pretty good generally speaking here, except for the overwhelming urge to punch people in the throat if they breathe and I can hear it. They say they aren't really sure why this happens but most people experience it. I did last time and if you are in my real life I am just going to say it now... I am sorry I almost tried to kill you on Day 4 & 5.  Sorry to my dog too, I know he's going to annoy the fuck out of me. But I love you Winston!!!

Days 6-7: I just want a nap…

  • Thank God this comes for me on Sat. & Sunday this week. Apparently my body will be finally figuring out that it isn't getting any more Reese's cups from the vending machine or giant Diet Mountain Dew on Saturday morning from Race Trac. No more quick energy fixes means an abundance of lethargy which means I will be buried in the heaven that is my soft, warm, snuggly bed with ten thousand blankets and pillows. Except for Sunday becasue I have to play tennis, then back to snoozefest!

That sums up the first 7 days and we will pick up with day 8 next Tuesday and recap how the first 7 actually played out.

A couple of additional things to report.

The Weigh In:

I weighed myself on Monday morning and I am up 2.5 lbs from where I ended my last Whole30 which in and of itself is not bad. The bad news is I gained back the additional 8-10 pounds I lost this past spring post Whole30. Womp. Womp.  I suspect it's partly water right now from overindulging in salty, fatty foods and alcohol during the holidays. If that's true then let's say I have regained maybe 6 pounds or so of fat. This is not horrible compared to yo-yo'ing I have done in the past where the scale tips 10-15 even 20 pounds in the opposite direction over a short period of time. When I commit to falling off the wagon I freaking hurl myself at the damn ground! But no weigh ins for 30 days and then it's just for reference.

Looking Ahead at This Weeks Challenges:

A Date - Someone randomly invited me for drinks and I am going to suggest Starbuck's and get a coffee or some nice hot tea. I never do this for a date, I prefer the crutch of alcohol when hanging with a guy for the first time. Lezbihonest... free drinks are a good thing. Side note, since the man-friend and I are non exclusive I think it best to keep all options for free beverages/food open.

Tennis Practice - Ugh...First one of the season and we always go out for drinks afterward and or have a beer or two up at the courts. It's going to be butt cold so I plan to play and get the hell back here to my bath tub for a nice hot soak in some Lavender Epsom salts.

First Tennis Match - Sunday and again, there is usually beer involved. This should be easier for me I breezed through it last year. Will have to bring some healthy food since most of what we usually have for a spread will be stuff I can't eat.

My Daughter's Birthday - I think we are going to celebrate over the weekend with a nail appointment and coffee. I'll buy a cake for the kids though. Her dad gets her for dinner this year which works perfect for me!

My Shopping List & What I am eating this week:

Several people have asked me about my shopping list and what I prepped so here it is!

List:

almond flour, macadamia nut butter, ghee, coconut aminos, bacon, extra light EVOO, eggs, kombucha, turkey burgers, avacado, carrots, nuts, chicken, beef, salmon, chicken sausage, spaghetti squash, zucchini, onions, coconut almond milk, mushrooms, spinach, lemon, butternut squash, grapefruit, coconut oil, berries/fruit, lara bars, epic bars, canned coconut milk, sriracha, Frank's Red Hot

What I prepped:

Breakfasts - I made a dozen egg muffins with left overs. Combos were breakfast sausage crumbled, onion, Frank's Red Hot and prime rib, horseradish, green onion. Scramble up a bunch of eggs, season with salt and pepper and pour it on top of your fixins in a greased muffin pan. Bake for 30 min or so. I will eat 2 for breakfast probably 3 days this week and freeze the rest. Other mornings I will have fresh fruit with nut butter and coconut flakes.

Snacks - Nuts mostly. I bought a couple of bars but they really suggest that you don't use too many. It's better to eat real food and save your bars only for on the go emergencies. Bars are not meals in the true spirit of Whole30.

Lunches - Alternating chicken sausage split and stuffed with spaghetti squash, onions, mustard & whole30 mayo and turkey burgers drizzled with sriracha with a baked white potato. I threw in some sauteed zucchini with all 5 of the lunch servings for something green.

Dinner - Whatever I feel like. Check my Instagram I will try and post pics every night if it's not leftovers!

Treats - A spoonful of nut butter here and there.

I think that is about all I have for today! Have a great day everyone and link up if you are breaking up with anything of note... food, booze, sugar, lovers... whatevs!

  2. it's the initial change in habit that's the toughest. back when i did my own version of this in 2012, i cut out that shit all at once and you're right - by the 5th day or so, murderation was happening all the live long day and i just locked myself up in my room for the sake of public safety. then i day 7 or 8, magic happened - it was like the angels were smiling down on me, the sky was blue, the sun was shining, the birds were singing...that was when my body was free and clear of all the crap and i was pure as the driven snow (LOL). i haven't looked back since!

you can do this! keep it up, be strong, know that change is hard and just push through. you've done this before, you can do this again!!!

  3. I don't remember the "kill all the things" phase last time but I definitely remember being exhausted and having the hangover headache. I think if I can get through the next 3 days I'll survive. Although it took everything in me last night to not have one last Christmas cookie. Ugh. I also have a happy hour "date" tonight with girl friends... so fun to sit and drink water, I just can't wait! Making notes to do some egg muffins this weekend to have for breakfasts next week.

  4. I saw someone's snap that said she didn't think it was as hard as she had imagined and that gave me hope - although I imagine I'll be hangry all the time!! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  5. Soooo the coconut milk, are there only certain kinds you can have? Someone commented that mine wasn't compliant in my instagram post yesterday. I wanted to be like bitch...you aren't compliant! LOL! I need to make those turkey burgers you were speaking of! Mmmmm!

  6. I'm not doing this as discussed, but I do want to try making the whole30 mayo. I know you are a huge fan and I imagine it's healthier all around, whether you're on this or not!
